[top ten tuesday] bingeworthy tv shows

I would much rather prefer to read than watch tv, but I have binged a few shows in my day. Other than the occasional binge, I mostly just watch tv with other people if they are watching.

Here are some bingeworthy tv shows:

  1. Stranger Things
  2. Parks and Recreation
  3. New Girl
  4. The Man in the High Castle (Amazon Prime)
  5. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  6. How I Met Your Mother
  7. The Office
  8. Gotham
  9. Agent Carter
  10. The Flash

[top ten tuesday] BOOKS THAT HAVE SHAPED MY EDUCATION

I started university again today and today’s TTT is all about school and learning (perfect timing, huh?)

the most important books to my education:

The Bible

I am christian, BUT even if I wasn’t, having a general understanding of the bible is the only way I passed AP Lit & Comp and is a big part of understanding any literature since there are so many constant allusions to the bible. Also, it is important as far as history goes.

To Kill a Mockingbird

TKAM is my favorite book I have ever had to read for school. I’ve read it 3 or 4 times and enjoy it every time. 10/10 would recommend.

1984

I have a couple of qualms with this book but I do think it is a good book to read and a good warning against totalitarian dictatorships.

Fluent Forever

I have been learning Dutch before studying abroad in the Netherlands second semester and I LOVE THIS BOOK. Still working through it but it is so great!!!

Margret Peterson Haddix books

Okay okay this is an author, but her books are what originally got me into reading and that is so so so valuable to me.

The Little Prince

I originally read this short book in English, and not only does it have so many great lessons that everyone should read and take to heart, but I then started reading it in French. It is the first book I have ever read in another language and I am proud of that.

All the Bright Places

I honestly don’t even remember this book super well. I just remember it made me understand suicide and mental health in a new and different way and it broke my heart.

The Great Gatsby & Crime and Punishment

Both of these classics are great books that I was forced to read in school but ended up enjoying A LOT.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I actually hated this book when I first read it, and maybe that was why it was so valuable. There are so many quotable and great sections of this book and I now I really enjoy the movie and I think if I tried reading it again I would like it more? It was important for me to realize I don’t have to like every book other people like and I don’t have to finish books if I don’t like them (although I did push through and finish TPOBAW).

[top ten tuesday] BOOKS TO KICK YOUR READING SLUMP TO THE CURB

When in a reading slump, a good book that is fast paced from the start can bring ya right out. Sometimes it might take a favorite book that you love to read over and over or a new book that is beyond good. Here are my top ten books to bring me out of a reading slump (in no particular order):

Caraval by Stephanie Garber (series)

this series recently became my favorite and so i highly suggest it to anyone anytime.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan (series)

this is the perfect series for anyone looking for an easy read that will leave you laughing and wanting more.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

if you want a book that will make you cry (we all need those moments) but is also filled with so much love, pick TFIOS.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (series)

there is a reason there was so much hype around this series. also one of the best book to movie adaptations EVER.

The Selection by Kiera Cass (series)

if you want a semi-dumb but sweet romance that won’t require much thinking, get swept away by this beautiful fairytale.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (series)

lyrical superhero adventures. nuff said.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (series)

this book starts REALLY WELL. seriously, take notes. for a book that starts at a good pace and continues, pick Mara Dyer. you will not be bored.

Three by Ted Dekker

for someone in search of a mystery & THRILLER, Three will leave you guessing until the very end. (i read this book when i was fairly young and still really enjoyed it, so i would say it is great for all ages too!)

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

you’re reading this blog, so this book is probably rather relatable & highly suggested by yours truly.

Every Last Word by Tamera Ireland Stone

more tears. i loved this book so much and although it wasn’t perfect, it made me feel SO MANY THINGS!

[photography] an introduction to my photography + TRIBEtyler CHALLENGE

Screen Shot 2018-07-24 at 11.54.59 PM

Tyler Shelton is a photographer and youtuber whom I have been following for a long time. I have mostly just been following him in theory since I didn’t actually have a DSLR or “nice” camera of my own (I have used my dad’s on occasion, but since going to college haven’t gotten much of the chance).

HOWEVER, I recently got a mirrorless camera and have been learning how to use it. (check out my instagram to see THAT journey here).

I decided to take up the #TRIBEtyler challenge and to grow my photography skills and knowledge. I am quite a bit behind (30+ weeks/videos), so I may be working to catch up and may pair some of the weeks together.

Screen Shot 2018-07-24 at 11.54.48 PM

I am so excited to see how much I grow and learn throughout the challenge.

[top ten tuesday] books i’d mash together GIVING CARAVAL

When I saw this weeks Top Ten Tuesday, I got really excited, but then fell into a sort of slump. It can be really difficult to think of two stories that would somehow compliment and enhance each other. I ended up going with The Giver & Caraval.

caraval.gif

Jonas would still be the main character who somehow starts seeing the world in more color and seeing past the sameness of his world. When he escapes beyond the fog, he lands in Caraval territory and somehow enters the game. He is overwhelmed by the mix of real and imaginary at the mystical around him and he runs into Scarlet and everyone else as he tries to survive and figure out the game, his life, and what he is doing with his new freedom (he obviously doesn’t have Gabe with him during this part at least).

[discussion] introduction 2018 DISCUSSION CHALLENGE

I have been following Shannon forever and when I saw (once again) the 2018 Discussion Challenge that Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight and Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction host, I knew I wanted to do it.

I love discussion posts. I love the interaction and getting to hear other people’s opinions and stances and having my worldview expanded or challenged or agreed upon. There are so many good things that come out of discussions.

I have posted many discussions in the past that have become my favorite posts I have written and since deleting my oldest blog, I may rework and repost some of them here because SOME THINGS JUST NEED TO BE DISCUSSED, ya know!?

ANYWAY, there are different levels of this challenge:

1-10 – Discussion Dabbler
11-20 – Creative Conversationalist
21-30 – Chatty Kathy
31-40 – Terrifically Talkative
41+ – Gift of the Gab

Since I am joining a little late in the game and there are 22 Sunday’s (including today) left in 2018, I am going to aim for 11-20 “Creative Conversationalist”. It would be SO GREAT if I could do a discussion a week, but I am going to aim for every other week and see where that gets me. Hopefully I will be able to do more, but we will see.

If you would like to check out the original sign up post, here it is.

[INTRODUCTION] who am i?

hi! i’m danae.

Untitled-Artwork-min

i am just a girl who wants to travel more than i can. because of this, i tend to try to make up for it by reading every book i can get my hands on.

this is not my first blog (or second), but i cannot seem to give up having a little piece of the internet that i somehow consider my creative portfolio–and entirely (this is funny since i am now going back to a wordpress account instead of self hosting and am losing some of my freedom *sigh*) mine.

this one is going to be different, less structured, and not only about books. actually, quite the opposite. it will be about my adventures (travel), writing, reading, and other related fields (they will relate don’t worry i will follow the niche rules at least a little).

as a photography minor who hopes to study short film making when i am studying abroad next spring, i will also be exploring as i find my own aesthetic and style.

this is a place that will become a portfolio and a way for me to process art all in one.

when i do study abroad, i will probably use this site as a space to sign up for my newsletter if you want weekly updates, stories, and pictures, but i might share the most notable ones in blog posts as well.

ten random facts about me:

  1. i love Jesus and consider myself a kingdom worker
  2. most of the time, when i am reading a book, i will start talking like the author talks (i.e. if they have a british accent in their writing, i will talk in british slang in my own life)
  3. the perfect day involves hiking (actual bouldering and exploring preferred) with friends, picnics, and reading for hours
  4. i play bass guitar currently for the intervarsity band at my university and am really good at starting to learn instruments (piano, clarinet, ukulele, bass), but not as good at mastering them
  5. i am a major extravert (enfj)
  6. when i graduate from university, i don’t want to go straight into the work force, but want to go on a working holiday since i will be young and as stated earlier, I WANT TO TRAVEL A LOT
  7. i have a basic knowledge and understanding of french and am currently learning dutch for when i study abroad in the netherlands. however, i do wish to learn many more languages and to be able to have conversations with locals when i travel
  8. the creative writing class i took last semester is my favorite class i have ever taken in my entire life and made me question my entire major (since i cannot minor in creative writing if i am not an english major *double sigh*)
  9. i am majoring in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations with minors in international communications and photography
  10. i went on a mission trip to northern ireland last summer, and it was the best experience i have ever had

DANAE IDENTIFIES WITH THE TERMS: JESUS FREAK, EXTROVERT, and OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST. HER FAVORITE ACTIVITY IS HIKING AND SHE ENJOYS GETTING LOST IN BOOKS. ALTHOUGH SOME PEOPLE CALL HER AUBREY, HERE, SHE GOES BY DANAE.

MAYBE DANAE.
